Navy Reserves

Author:Peter

After I got off the IKE, I stayed a civilian for 2 years to get the taste of the NAVY out of my mouth - Then it was back into the Reserves... It was a totaly different experience - It was more like being in the Lions club than being in the military.
Every drill we were subject to random urinalysis... By this time in my life, I had stopped getting stoned. However, every time my number came up, I'd make a big deal about having eaten poppy seed muffins that morning and lots of herbal tea. This was just an exercise in getting the MAA/Chiefs riled up that there was a doper in their midst who was trying to cover his ass in case he got popped.

Questions

Here are some things to ponder rather doing your work....
Does any one remember what was written under the RCP A on the RPCP?
( It was a picture of the first CO of IKE with the words "Watch your panel Fu##er")

Where was the empty bottle of Tiger beer?
( it was behind the "hear-here" booth in numer two MMRLL(port side)

Who was "Mister Flangehead" and where did he stand watch?
( Mister Flangehead was a piece of pipe insulation with a face painted on him and he was positioned on the battle latern right behind the two plant RO so that he could watch the panels)

Does anyone know what happen to RC Div Officer who went by the name Sonny?

Noodle Central part 1

After the 83 Med, we moved into a beach house in Va Beach. It was called Noodle Central because some Aux Noodles had a house 4 blocks north and 3 blocks south of us. Our landlady was a rich real estate agent in Richmond and called the house her cottage. It was filled with her furniture and heirlooms. It didn't take long for her to regret renting to us. Most of us went on Christmas leave, but PJ and Major Mike stayed behind. The oil ran out and it was near 0 and the pipes froze and busted. She paid half the repair bill and let us know how disappointed she was. We didn't score points with the neighbors either, coming in drunk and loud in the middle of the night, even chopping wood at 3am. We also used the dishes for target practice with PJ's BB gun, and PJ even shot a neighbor kid who was trying to steal our keg. The croquet matches in the back yards always riled the neighbors, especially when we started them with Jimi Hendrix's version of "The Star Spangled Banner."

Another thing that endeared us to our neighbors was the constant work being done on cars. We all drove beaters, so we were constantly doing something that required the engines to be revved up. Cal had this old Caprice he had bought off of Tom A, and we decided to destroy it in the yard. We beat it with hatches and crowbars and then drove it into a dumpster at Ft. Story. We were constantly threatened with eviction, so when the lease was about to expire, we threw a big party complete with a band in the back yard. It was going great until about 11pm, when the cops shut us down. We moved inside, but the cops came back and really shut us down, or so they thought. We moved it to Noodle South and kept it going all night. We moved out a few days later, and needless to say, we didn't get our security deposit back. I bet that house wasn't rented to any more sqids after that.

Safety Puke

In 1983, I belatedly made MM1. I took the test right after my 4 year point, so initially I was PNA'd because they didn't add my points for my Good Conduct Medal, aka the "Ain't been caught" medal. By then, all the MM1 jobs had been doled out, so I was Pete's assistant WCS for RM21. The ELT's had supplied the last Nuke to Safety and he was really whining about being there. So I got shipped off since they needed a fly and I was the junior one in RM. It was really skate duty. I had a "12 hour workday" that could be done in about an hour each day. I stayed in the gym a lot and in my old rack in Rx Berthing. When I got bored, I actually visited the plants. I missed out on the ORSE that got CDR Reddoch sent packing and missed the Bo Linfors tenure. I went back to RM after the Med and got shift leader in the yards dumped on me. Needless to say, I didn't quite meet their expectations as an MM1, but my crew did the most work and the best quality work, despite being hung over all the time.

Addendum to Noodle Central

I remember one of the parties at Noodle central - a neighbors dog (golden retriever) broke free and came over to visit the Noodles. They dressed the dog up in a discarded "IKE Gala" costume and sent him home.

Welcome Aboard

I got to the Ike May 24,1980 in the IO. Upon entering Rx Berthing, I was greeted by Will, who promptly asked for $10 for Betamax Club dues. All the lights were out and I was trying to find an empty rack, but they all had crap piled all over them. Major Mike, who was on my crew in the other class at MARF, greeted me and showed me an "empty" rack. All I had to do was throw all the crap on another one and move in. The next day, I reported to RT and met Cal, Steely Dan, and Junior. Most of the guys had their heads shaved and I was wondering if it was punishment or lice or something. It was part of the Shellback ceremony, it turned out. A few days later, Wags and Pete and the rest of my class showed up and we had a very interesting group in RT. After RT, I was sent to RM21, where Pete W was my level leader, Ian Forbes was WCS, and Bubba Boone was Group Sup. It was a privelege to serve with and befriend such a great bunch and made the Navy a more tolerable experience.

Primary Valve Operator

Department:Rx
Author:Tim Palange
Era:1983

Hi Pete -
That compound we used to use on primary valves was called "Neolube," I think. It was just a suspension of graphite in alcohol, nothing fancy so it wouldn't turn radioactive. I had to qualify PVO to stand 4th deck; got stuck standing it for my first ORSE, along with Mike Iuliucci and Carl Childers (Chilly, the guy who never left the ship during a deployment), with Koster as CRW I think. Remember "PVO Dave Sez"? I stole a bunch of those before getting out, don't ask me why, I never intended to work in nuclear power on the outside. Lucky me, I also got stuck helping to do the resin discharge in the yard after the deployment.
Don't ask me how or why I remember all this garbage. It's just trivia.

Dr. John -
Were you the corpsman who treated my pilonidal cyst?

As a Corpsman in Ike during that era of the fecal testing in Egypt, I want admit that I also took part in this study by contributing my "sample". Hey, I figure Ike gave me crap for so long, it was only fair that I return the favor, right?

J.
