Pissin on the Med Department: Rx Author: Gary Era: 1984 Date: 06/04/05 Having an otherwise long deployment extended even further is a very stressful thing. After we got through with Peacekeeping duty in Lebanon, the JFK was late to relieve us. Ike got word that she was on her way so we headed for the straights to leave the Med, wrap up the cruise and head for home (Hallalujah!). Petty Officer Moore realizing that this was his last med cruise and in his excitement decided to wake me in the middle of the night and asked that I join him for a ceremony on the fan tail. So, I drag myself out of the rack, it was probably time for watch anyway and follow him. It was a clear, cool night with a light breeze and moon shining on the sea. Moore said a few official words and commenced to whizzin into the churn below.

Volkswagon Golf Department: Rx Author: Gary Era: 1985 Date: 06/04/05 When the Ike was in drydock at Portsmouth I used to live at Noodle North. One time we were having a party at Noodle Central and Sal L. came driving a new Volkswagon Golf he had just bought probably with his Star money. Well this thing had a security system that would send a signal to his pager when someone got close to the VW. So, we'd take turns going by his new car and banging on the window to set off his beeper. The car was just parked right out side across the street yet he kept coming out each time to check on it. I guess lots of guys bought new cars with their re-enlistment money. I know an RE divr that bought a new Comaro with crossfire injection system that was pretty fast. Vinney B. got rid of his brown vette and traded it in on a matching pair of new rides. I think he got a Trans-Am for himself and a new comaro for Miss. Thang or maybe he took the chevy and she got the pontiac, not sure but they both had T-tops and looked pretty costly setting next to each other.

Sorrento cut short Department: Rx Author: Gary Era: 1983 Date: 06/04/05 I was on the train from Naples to Sorrento for liberty when helicopters flew over with loud speakers saying everyone return to Ike. I was standing over some local reading the front page headlines of his Italian newspaper, "Americani Massacre" and I knew the shit had hit the fan. This prompted our participation in Multi-National Peacekeeping. I still have my Navy Expeditionary Medal. The 1983 suicide bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut killed 241 American servicemen. A U.S. District Court judge ruled in 2003 the suicide truck bombing was carried out by the group Hezbollah with the approval and funding of Iran's senior government officials and ordered that the plaintiffs in the case -- the servicemen wounded in that bombing and the families of those killed -- have a "right to obtain judicial relief" from Iran. The judge called the October 23, 1983 bombing "the most deadly state-sponsored terrorist attack made against United States citizens before September 11, 2001."

In fact, when you click on someone's name to email him, I act as intermediary so that no one's email address (except mine) is ever compromised. re. being called back to IKE by helicopters... The shore patrol was also out trying to herd sailors back on board. Most of us went willingly - However the noodles headed grdgingly back, one bar at a time.. The shore patrol would chase them out of one bar and they would trot next door to another bar... slowly inching their way back to IKE; bar by bar. - Amazing the shore patrol had so much patience with them. Then there were some (like Jeff J.) who didn't see/hear the helos (wink, wink) and ended up with a 2 week vacation in Naples when Ike pulled out early. Finaly, these guys were flown back to the IKE.

Naples: Exit...stage right Department: Rx Author: Flounder (Tim P.) Era: 1983 Date: 06/04/05 That '83 Med sucked - 90+ daze at sea, don't think we even got a beer (which I could have sold for a good price), one swim call that was cancelled just because some sharks happened to wander by, then 3 days in beautiful Napoli and off we go again! Even Bob Amante was left behind. A good friend of mine from nuc school who was then on the USS Cincinnati, a fast-attack sub, showed me a periscope picture he took of the Ikeatraz when they were between us and Beirut.

Talkin bout cars again Department: Rx Author: Gary Era: 1984 Date: 06/04/05 Hey Elmo, I had forgot what happened to that old land barge Dodge Monaco, what a piece of crap, but it had a huge engine that drank plenty of gas and cruised pretty well out on the highway. I picked it up from a used car salesman one time when I was home on leave and then drove it back to VA so I'd have something to get around in. It served it's purpose as a disposable car. One time AbbeyNormal, me and Kevin I think drove it to Baltimore for the weekend and it almost got totaled. I had forgotten that you had it but now I remember getting something in the mail shortly after I got out of the Navy that it was impounded and if I wanted it back I'd have to pay to get it out. I guess disposable cars don't need to be registered. There was no way I was going back up there to get that land boat. Guess it wound up in the junk yard or compressed into a chunk of metal. Probably weighed a couple tons. Anyway, this is a cool site and it's fun sharing old sea stories with old friends.

Steel mess trays Department: Rx Author: peter Era: 1982 Date: 06/05/05 Remember going through the mess line and picking those silver trays out of those racks on wheels? There was always some trays that practicaly seemed welded into those racks! No matter how hard you tugged, it was impossible to free them. - I wonder if there were some trays that never got used for years... they would just be recycled back to the galley, a permanent fixture of the tray cart. If you look at the images page on this site, there's a picture of the modern day IKE mess line. They're eating off of plates for God sakes!!!! - How do you expect a sailor to properly defend this nation unless he's eating off of a stainless steel prison tray??? - I mean realy now!

Sal's Alarming VW Department: Rx Author: Charlie Era: 1984 Date: 06/05/05 Another good place to set off Sal's alarm was at the Shillelagh. It was a riot watching him run like a raped ape to see who was messing with his car. I wonder why he didn't think of some clever way to get it to go off when it was his turn to buy a round. It seems he tried any other way he could.
