Skip Mullis

Department:Rx
Author:Brian T
Era:1986
Date:06/06/05

Skip was on precom unit Teddy roosevelt. He was on vacation with his step sons and slipped and fell off a wall at a beach and broke his neck/back. Although he wasn't paralized it screwed him up pretty good. Last I heard (87) he was waiting for a medical discharge. I tried to look him up a couple of times to no avail. Dan Reighard was also on TR. He divorced his wife and got out at his EAOS. Danny Mims got denuked for failing his PPWS quals on TR.I dont know what happened to him after that. He, Jimmy Stewart and Jackson bought a house together in VA Beach. Dirk Huber got out after TR, Got married and for a while was a manager for a Chilli's. last I heard he was doing headhunting for resterants. Jeff ward showed up on the USS California in the 90's. He got out and went to work for John Deere in IA. Andy White was a prison guard in New York last time I heard. Steve Adamic was an air traffic controller. Fritz Heimbigner Works at the DC Cook nuke plant in Michigan.

Always wondered what happened to that bike

Elmo, I always wondered what happened to that motorcycle. Was that the yellow Yamaha Enduro or something else?. I also remember selling a Yamaha Dirt bike to either Will Paul or Mombo. By the way, The RM22 LPO's that I remember were Bill Ferrin then Steve Hess. I believe it was Joe witinski (sp?) before Bill. Gary, I remember your cousin being on the ship. I believe I still have some pictures stashed somewhere from when she was in the wet T-shirt contest in Ft Lauderdale. I can't remember if she won or was second, but her assets were incredible. If I can find them I'll send them to pete for posting.

Chief Mullis

Department:Rx
Author:Gary
Era:1984
Date:06/06/05

Chief Mullis needed a list for everything. A list of things needing fixed, another list of things needing cleaned, and then a Master list of all his damn lists. Him and his lists I thought would be the death of us all in RM22. I tryed to stay away from him as much as possible cause he would just make shit up out of the blue to put your ass to work on a crazy ass list of some sort. I think I actually took the time to make one of his freakin lists one time and then had to turn around and check the damn thing off. I asked him if it would pay off workin his lists and he told me something about having to blow your own horn. I asked him what that meant and he explained to me how he managed to work his way up the chain by reminding folks how good "He" was. Somehow I just couldn't bring myself to follow that advise. Freakin Lists..., I can't believe that shit now lookin back. Oh well, what the hell, you do what ya gotta do, right?

Supply duty

I used to help Jim Adkins with supply duty. Those guys had it made pretty good. Always got the first pick of things coming to the plant including new tools, parts, new Bitch Books, writing material, coffee, etc. Remember those huge bails of rags we'd get and throw in this huge box called the rag bin for soppin up oil all over the damn place. There was oil leaking out of damn near everything and you could never get it all mopped up. It was funny though with all the different kinds of materials you see in the rag bails. I always wondered where they got those rags, probably from the salvation army. They made very good mattresses up on the CTGs for sleepin. They had a funky smell and sometimes partially used ones would get tossed back in with the clean ones and it just felt like you were a homeless bum, sleepin on a pile of ol rags.

Thanks for the update Teif!

Brian,
thanks for the update on all of those people - I remember Reighard making some hilarious bitch book entries (if anyone has any bitchbooks from any era, I'd love to be able to get some scans for this site. BTW, the RM22 WCS after Joe Ski was not Bill Ferrin, but rather Will Paul. and that dirtbike you sold Mombo was responsible for tearing my ear off!
Another thing, Mullis was good at was hiding dollar bills in dirty corners in order that he would be able to confront you with it later to prove you hadn't cleaned there. We used to take the money and just leave the mess.

Brother Cal stopped by Peoria, it was fun catching up with him!
Anyone else, passing through Peoria,IL, please look me up...unless you are still pissed at me for having screwed you over on a watch relief.

I've added new fields to the registry (City, State) where you can list where you live, in case folks might be passing through your town. Update your entry if you so choose!

MultiNational Peacekeeping...

one thing struck me abut our emergency trip to Lebanon right after the Marine Corps bombing... The first thing IKE did upon getting "on station" was hold a Command Zone Inspection. There we were, steaming a couple miles off the coast of Lebanon seeing smoke which I presumed to be gunfire... and all doors and hatches are wide open, brown paper on the floor, etc. Sailing this close to shore was probably a pretty vulnerable moment fo r IKE... and we were more worried about shiny decks!

Also... The whole time I was on IKE, Only once did we pull out to sea early and that was after the bombing of the USMC barracks. - What is weird is that before we had pulled into Naples, we were warned to be on the lookout for helos flying around with suspended sonar-bouys (our signal that IKE was pulling out early) That was the only time we had ever been warned we might pull out early.
... just a strange coincidence.

In all the stories told on this great website, nobody has mentioned what happened to the legendary Pete Ryan - what is he doing, why isn't he here?

Hey Tief -
Yep, I think she came in third place. She probably would have won first place but she knew I was in the audience, embarrassed, and was holding back. Please spare me the contrast of seeing a partially clothed family member on the IB site. However, if your interested in seeing some rather compromising photos of other "anonymous" shipmates letting it all hang out on liberty, then I might be able to scrounge through my old stack of Nav pics. ;-)
