Something I always wanted to know...
...is, who thought up the name "Noodles" and what were the circumstances? |
Noodles
I believe MMCS Colpus first called that group of guys a bunch of wet noodles. |
Origion of the Noodles
The term Noodle was origionally bestowed upon Cal by Wags. One night at Shady Acres, Cal just wanted to stay home instead of going out barhopping. Wags told him he was acting like a "Wet Noodle". After Colpus heard us calling Cal a Noodle, he started calling all of us that hung out with Cal "the Noodle Gang". I think he actually said it first at quarters before we went to St. Thomas when he was telling people how not to act in port. |
Loose ends of loose ends
Lessee...Daryl Creech, laziest man alive...C'mon John, just because he was an ELT doesn't necessarily make him lazy...(snicker) Please tell Dave Sims and Tom Baragona I said hi if you see them. I'm surprised Tom is still in VA - he couldn't wait to get back to Joisey when he got out; does he still have the world's most perfect hair? Who was Vladimir? He must've gotten on there after I left. Too bad about Ace. Even he didn't deserve to get busted for something that didn't happen on his watch. For some reason he liked to talk all about his family, situation, past, etc. to me - don't know why. Would like to catch up with him some day. Too bad my ship never goes to PR, just USVI. Rx Rod was the M-Div. instructor in RT when I left, as I recall; good guy; think I went through RT with him. Jack Piercy...died?? Sorry to hear that. He was older than most of us, but gee... Please remind me what KIWI stood for - wasn't that Adrian Houston? |
IKE TAKES SANITY
I was the section leader one fine IKE day when one of my troops lost his sanity. The ABH3 had been on IKE 3 years seemed well adjusted anyhow, he said he needed a uniform so I let him go home. At 8oclocks he was still not back. I called & his wife and she he told her the CO (Capt Brown) said he could stay home as there were enough people for the duty section! Again I asked her to talk to him but she said he was busy eating dinner and did not want to be disturbed! I marked him UA. The next morning at 745 a.m. he came up the Officers Brow and said he had an appointment with the skipper his excact words I AM THE MAN TO SEE THE MAN. Very loud and repeating himself! Chief C was leaving and snagged him up since he was V-1. Poor ABH3 ended up at Portsmouth in the Crazy Ward. When I went to visit I remember how content he looked as he sat at a little table eating his ice cream and cake. That should of been a warning for the rest of us. He was processed out one month before our 98 med cruise. |
MEMORIES OF IKE WILL NEVER REST !!!
ITS FUNNY HOW AFTER ALL THESE YEARS I STILL HAVE DREAMS (IKEMARES, AS I CALL THEM) ABOUT STILL ACTIVE ON IKE !! DREAMED THE OTHER NIGHT THAT I HAD JUST RE-ENLISTED ON IKE AND REALIZED I WAS NOT GETTING A RE-ENLISTMENT BONUS. AND WORST OFF, WE JUST RETURNED FROM A 6-MONTH TOUR AND WAS GOING BACK OUT !!! I WAS TRYING EVERYTHING I COULD TO GET OUT OF IT !! IT'S JUST AMAZING HOW REAL IT WAS. I THINK I COULD GO ON IKE TODAY, PUT MY UNIFORM BACK ON AND IT WOULD BE LIKE I NEVER LEFT !!! SCARY !!! |
Another planet heard from...
I can update you on a 2 of the RE div electricians you mentioned- Marc Petroboni and Tom Rickenbach, as I saw both of them 2 years ago at Walt Mooney's (RE Div 1978 - 1982) funeral. Marc is doing well, married wtih a young son- a stay at home dad last I heard. My family and I spent part of a vacation with Tom Rickenbach and his family- at Knoebel's amusement park in PA. Nice place to bring families if you're looking for a good old-fashioned amusement park with wooden roller coasters and decent prices. Tom and I get together about once a year since he travels quite a bit. Ted Easlick, another great guy from RC div, passed on about 3 years ago. Ted was the chief resident inspector for the NRC at a plant in NC. Pete- great site! I ran into Dave Parker after 25 years at my favorite greasy spoon in Chelmsford, Mass (skips), and he told me I had to visit this site- glad I did, keep up the good work! Gary Krauch |
My first port and investigation
ABH1 reminded me off my first port and what I did to the Divo. Our divo at the time was a SR.cheif and was at the same hotel we were at in Fort Lauderdale. There also was a rather "busty" female sailor from laundry there as well. This Sr. Cheif was trying his hardest to get the female sailor to take off her bikini. He was not drunk he was smashed, and he was real loud infront of everyone begging for various things from her. At about 8pm it seemed that every cheif on the boat had found their way to this hotel, and they were all around the pool. They were very, very loud. So loud that the police showed up. I could tell things were headed south and told my friend I was there with that we needed to leave. We were the lowest ranking sailors there, and I knew we would get the blame when things went south. He wanted to stay, so I left. I walked back to the ship until some A-div guy that had rented a car saw me. to be continued. |
My first port and investigation cont.
So we rode around for a while before we went back to the ship. I got up the next morning and it turns out that someone set that hotel on fire. I go back out and get on the bus from the ship and start telling a friend about how this SR. Cheif was trying to get the female sailor to either show or give up the goods, and everything else that was going on. I kept saying how wild our Sr Cheif was. After I went on for awhile he said, look next to you. That damn Sr. Cheif was on the bus sitting next to me, I looked at him and he smiled and said "that was a wild party last night wasn't it?" I just nodded my head and looked forward. When we pulled out I was called in to be interviewed for the investigation in the fire, I told them why I left and what I saw. Guess what my friend was blamed for the fire, went to mast and was about to be kicked out before he made a couple phone calls. I forget who he knew or who he called, but he was taken off of restriction and it was like nothing ever happened. |
Insanity on the Ike
Yes, I remember many people being sent to the "nut bin" in Portsmouth, I had at least 3 coworkers go over there. I almost fell victim once, let me explain. We had just pulled in from the 2000 cruise. It was a rough cruise for me and I was so glad to be back that I starting doing stupid stuff. I was in my whites and I took a black marker and drew a jolly roger on my dixie cup, then I took a coat hanger and bent it into a hook, and jacked my arm up so it looked like my hand was a hook. I then went running around A-div, rx, and airwing berthing in this get up. I was yelling things about cannonballs, mateys and parrots. An E-div cheif that hated me as much as I hated her(the unlawfullone for those who know her) saw me and told me to go to medical to get checked out. I probably did lose it for a while there. I go to medical and tell me to forget about it. We just got back in port and they just wanted freedom like the rest of us. So I went back to acting like and idiot until liberty call. |
