RE: AESS OVERBOARD
Hey Radar, I remember Moose and Travis. We were all in the same division. But your name does not ring a bell. Who are you ? Have you kept in contact with Moose and Travis ? |
Mamie Crash
I was aboard Ike when Mamie Crashed on Crete. I Believe that the AD1 that Jake was talking about was AD1 Brian Lafferty. I might be mistaken, but I do know that a First Class named Brian Lafferty was on that plane. I worked for the Chaplain's Office during that time and helped prepare the Memorial Service that we held in the Hanger Bay. I still have some copies of the bulletin that was used during that service. I also knew the LCDR from safety that was the pilot on the plane. |
Mamie Crash
I was looking thru the 81/82 NATO cruise book and the the correct name of the AD1 who died when Mamie crashed was Carter Kriz, what a shame he was getting out and I know he had a wife and 3 or 4 kids.Does anyone else remember someone who was on the plane when it went down? |
The AT1 Brian Lafferty that John Hodge refers to was from VAQ 132, and yes he too was on Mamie.. |
02 level cat spaces ?
During the SLEP overhaul in Newport News, I was assigned as a hot work safety inspector on 3rd shift in Fire Watch division. I probably stood in 97%+ of all the spaces on IKE because of that. But I noted that in the hanger bay, I would see a couple rows of windows at about the 02 level, and I never found / was in those spaces. Are they the obsoleted 02 cat spaces mentioned previously here ? Catapults amidships don't make much sense, but it's always puzzled me. (And if I'm competely off base, I wasn't an airdale, so forgive me). They were probably just accessed right off a stupid ready room or something ... I mean, I was EVERYWHERE on that ship (from the 010 to inside JP-5 tanks, even under the boat). And where was the bubble accessed from ? I think I was in that, but 20 years later, not sure. |
Those windows.
The windows that Mr. Eureka was refering to I believe were the windows in the Hangnar bay Conflag stations. Although they seemed to be mainly used as makeout spots for the boys and girls in the hangar bay. There was not much room in there. As far as what they did in there other than "naughty things" I am not sure, bit I think they could control whatever there was to control in the hangar bay from there. The access to hangar bay one's conflag station was on the 02 level, directly accross from reactors hepa filter room (another makeout spot). One of our shops was right around the corner so we used to wait until someone went into either the Conflag Station or the Hepa Fitler room and then either spy on them or scare the crap out of them. You could enter the waist cats bubble aft of the Chaplains area. The bow cats were up more by wardroom 1and 2. I do not remember any other major landmarks near enough to it to help. |
Under the Ship
Mr. Eureka had mentioned going under the ship. That was one of the greatest things that I got to do. It was one of the last duty days I had on the Ike and we had just gotten into the dry dock at Newport News. The inplant ac's overboard discharge were lined up wrong and were not discharging into the pipes that the shipyard had fastened to the bottom of the ship, they were instead spewing water right back into the dry dock. So I had to go under the ship and figure out how it got so screwed up and how we could fix it. I was surpised to find that the hull was just riveted together. There was a bunch of other interesting things I noticed down there, but since we were behind the yellow and magenta rope for those, I will not mention them. One thing I am sure I could mention is the "stabilizer fins" that ran allong the port and starboard sides of the ship below the water line. They are designed to keep the ship from rocking too much. |
Hey Ron, what hangar bay are you talking about? all three? The only windows I can remember are from the conflag stations |
conflag stations
Yeah, I'd say that's what those windows were. I think they were only in Hangar Bay 2. They must've not welded anything in there during our time in the yards (18 months). |
Stabilizers
I believe the "stabilizers" you are referring to are the skirts to protect the ship from torpedoes. |
