Nuke Power ?

Department:Ops

I had heard that while in port Norfolk, Ike sold electricity back to the City of Norfolk power grid, because the reactor was always up and running.

True ?

Electricity

Hi Ron,
It would be technically possible to send some electric power from the ship to shoreside via the shore power cables. But in 8 1/2 years on Nimitz-class carriers I never saw it done. Supplying power to shore would also involve some rather unusual plant and electric distribution system lineups. Almost every time we came in, we took on shore power and shut down both reactors. There probably would have been an insurrection in Rx and Eng Depts if we had to stay on board and man steaming watches (it takes a LOT more guys to man a steaming engineroom than it does one that is shut down).
I vaguely recall the story of a conventional carrier that supplied electricity to some city in Washington state for one harsh winter in the '30s or '40s. Of course, those were the days when cities were a lot smaller and electrical demand was a lot lighter. I doubt that any carrier, even though they generate a LOT of electricity, could supply much of the load of the typical city of today.

Poison Chicken Fryquel and Puke

The cooks messed up the Cornish Hens on one of my duty days, and those of us with duty that day got food poisoning. I did not feel that bad, but I was no where near 100%. That next morning we had a Fryquel spill(fryquel is the hydraulic fluid used in the aircraft elevators, it is also a nerve agent.Mil-spec 71945)in #4 aircraft elevator. Well, cleaning up that fluid pushed me over the edge. Fryquel will do nasty things to you, if it gets on your skin it numbs you, if you inhale it, it can lead to you lungs to stop working. I felt myself starting to get sick and all the heads in the area were closed for one reason or another. I ended up running up the aft ladder up to the fantail and hurling everything in my stomach out in to the jellyfish filled water below. We happened to be pulled in so that the fantail was on the parking lot side. All the people waiting for the Saturday morning tours got to see a sailor puking over the side up close and personal. What a way to start your tour.

The Best RP

Department:AIMD
Author:John Hodge
Era:1979

This story is a dedication story. I learned today that a great friend passed away last Friday, July 14th, 2006. His name was Keith Swanson, RP2, we worked in the Chaplain's Office. What a good guy. After we came back from the 79 Med Cruise, Swanson, Mcgowan and myself went to New York and stayed drunk the whole weekend. I was a kid from a small town and never had drank in my life. These guys knew what they were doing. We went from one bar to the next. Never giving it a rest. From that time to this I have never wanted to drink again. He passed away from alcholism. It can bring back some good memories, but leave you with some bad health problems.

Sleazing off PMS and tagouts, cont.

Department:Rx
Author:Flounder

Was just re-reading some of the PMS/tagout sleaze stories from page 19...One time when I was on watch in #1 EOS, T-bear came in with a tagout for one of the feed pumps that only required one tag. The PPWO authorized it, T-bear went out and "hung" the tag. About half an hour later, he came back in and the WO authorized clearing the tag; T-bear walked out and came back in about 10 seconds later, tag in hand!! Everyone was amazed at how fast he got down to the feed pumps and back to EOS! ;)

Shore power

Never been done as far as I know. for one most transmission lines are 13.2 KV or better. even though the transformers step it down to 4160v for the ship I don't think the shore power reverse power relay would allow it and their is no way unless there was a National emergency would an RO let this happen. Also after house loads there would not be much left over to supply anyone much. 10MW maybe. add to that the ratings of the shore power breakers themselves. Lady Lex did it in the 50's but Flounder hit the nail on the head- lower loads. That's my 2 cents anyway. R/Brian

I had the Fly One hole for awhile then hurt my foot and needed to come off the deck for a while & went to V-1 DC the, Then the 2000 Cruise I dislocated my shoulder & got to go to V1 Suppy. I was always out and about relocating things through out the ship! I was in Duty Section 1,2 & 5. What page you on?

For ABH1, the failed attempt to boycot the cruisebook

Department:AIMD
Author:MM2 Sol The Bull
Era:2001
Date:07/21/06

My LPO and myself tried to boycott the cruise book in 1998. Our chief told us we had to have our picture taken, so we avoided it at all costs. However one of the PH's caught me working one day and that photo made into the cruisebook. If you have that cruisebook, go to page 332, I am the guy with all the gauges behind him. I have never seen a cruise book from 2000, but if you look at the A-div guys look for a guy named Dupler. I think I have my picture in that one. If you smoked I am sure you had seen me on the sponson more than once. Also, I used to wear a hat from FFG11 Clark instead of the IKE ballcap(another protest). I was there from Dec 1996 to July 2001. If you worked in the air office next to the 3m offices and the new gym, I know who you are.
