MMC Mosher
Dan, Yes, I recall MMC Brian K Mosher. See my story entitled 'speeding ticket' on page 54. |
New checkins
It's good to see Mark Pietroboni on here - Hi Mark...Don't know if you remember me; I was a hopeless nub in RE when you left. Wonder if "Pietroboni's Pigs" are still spinning away on the 4th decks of the RARs?? They still had that nickname 3 years after you left! I spent many a long hour stoning those commutators and trying to undercut the mica, but still did a lousy job of it...just ask Mike Seidler... And Robert Fenske - weren't you an instructor in RT for a while? I seem to recall that you bought a nice racing bike in Italy - a Colnago, wasn't it? I took up bike touring when I was stationed on the Vinson in Alameda, and have done several long trips on my Cannondale ST600. |
5 Star Hotels?
I am afraid we were never able to get past the front doors of any 5 star hotels. I remember getting kicked out of one in Corfu after about 30 seconds, we never tried again. We slept under boats on the beach in Greece, in some back alley in Spain, on the beach on the Island of Capri in Naples, and in some guys backyard on his lawn chair in France. Think of all the money we saved, and just went and blew in the clubs. |
Top Doc
I went to donate blood once (remember Vampire Liberty?), and was turned away due to my blood pressure being too high. I got referred over to Sewell's Point, and they gave me a full battery of tests - X-Ray, EKG, blood work, etc. When I came back for the results, the Doc sat me down and said I had a serious blood disease, and had I been in the Med recently ? I said, no, more like 18-24 months ago. Doc said, no, it would have had to been in the last 6 months, incubation period or whatever. Then the doc goes, oh, sorry ... wrong medical file. |
Rod Drives
In the old days I believe there were 8 rod drive power supplies that occupied most of 4th deck. I'm sure they've been replaced by now with solid state technology. Can anyone from the modern era tell us what they do now with all that space on 4th deck? |
the 4th deck space
Power supplies are still there as of September. No extra space. |
The Floating City of 69
Now that the IKE is out on a cruise I am reminded of one of the craziest stories I ever heard out to see. There was a rumor going around the ship on both of my deployments that Nostradomas (I hope I spelled his name right) said that the floating city of 69 would disapear. We never vanished. Anyone else hear this one before. I wonder if that story is sweeping the decks of the IKE today. |
Newport News
Gladys Drew knew this 50-ish Russian hooker / MILF named Gladys that lived in downtown Newport News. This was a good 3 months or so before we settled into our apartment. Right before the yard period, we began to make frequent trips to Newport News, and locating this female barfly was no challenge at all. She was open for bizness. Gladys took Drew and I to her place, a dingy apartment on the 4th floor accessed via climbing some rickety and unsafe rotting stairs. Gladys also had no electricity. I had a full fifth of brandy, and sat down in the dark living room to get drunk, and they went off to the bedroom to hump. After about 20 minutes, they called for me to join them. I said, no thanks I'll pass. To me, she was more than a little too easy. Especially without a raincoat. Anybody else have any Gladys stories ? I know she screwed a lot of sailors ... |
'88 Med
On Page 60, "ABH1" was bragging that they were scheduled for 10 port calls, but only made 8, well on the '88 med, we made at least 11 liberty calls, that I can remember. Palma de Mallorca (twice), Toulon, Marsaille, Cannes (twice), Haifa, Antalya Turkey, Livorno (Pisa) Italy, and Naples. We also pulled into Sigonella, but a special liberty chit was required to go ashore there. |
Floating City To Be Sunk
TOO WILD! Just this morning I told some lady about that rumor! I always checked my floatcoat for that very reason. I even bought the book to try and figure out the year. I just wonder if the floating city was 911 or meant the USS COLE. Then the TAO told me of the blind spot & every office & people on the outside of the skin are EXPENDABLE. Yeap my office was on the outside skin. Oh and those five star hotels I went on line and got them for $38 bucks! Only once did I pay $100. Remember Suda Bay Crete That was nice for $40 bucks! Chief Knauber left Deshotel in his room and he was UA and then Des lies to the skipper cause Knuaber asked him to. Till the skipper told him it a $5000 fine and brig time. He cracked like an egg. Knuaber never put on Senior. They both were banished to the ship. Which made me happy cause Des took my watches. In Corfu the USS Baton had been thru two weeks earlier and 2000 Marines and Squids trashed the island. Ike shows up and catch hell for being Americans. |
