Bull remember the funny BINGO's on IKE TV. I remember siting in the 1st Class Mess & the prize was $240 bucks I'm sailing on meds due to dislocated shoulder so I was a little slow at checking the numbers. Tim looks over and says you got it go go go. I stagger up there and six people are waiting to claim the prize. I thought I propably didn't get it. Well they checked all the numbers and I was the the only winner! They had me on tv asking me what was I going to do with my winnings and all I could think of was buy drugs! I stammered hotel next port. My mom had sent me a whole bottle of valium when she heard I had hurt my arm. Gotta love those care packages from home.

Speed Racer

Drew lost his VA driver's license when he got clocked doing 90 in a 45 up in Denbigh. What's ironic is that he also held a license from another State as most of us did, so he was technically good to go. But he chose to hand the keys to me for the 6 months suspension.

About this time, our LPO complained he was tired of morning muster becoming "optional", and stated anyone late would be written up harshly, no excuses. Tardiness hadn't been a problem for us, but as luck would have it, the next morning, the alarm clock malfunctioned - we were running 20 minutes late.

I drove Drew's car down Warwick Blvd. like it was a motorcycle - weaving & speeding. There was a long line to enter the Ike parking lot, so I blew down the wrong side of the street against traffic, and cut back in line at the most favorable second.

We hiked off in triple time, changed into dungarees, and made muster by an easy 2 or 3 minutes.

The guys actually thanked me later.

Speed Racer Pt. 2

Another time I was leisurely driving in to work at night during the yards. I was on Warwick Blvd. again (right before the park where we did the annual fitness test once / near K Mart if anybody recalls details), when something passed me so fast it was a blur. Scared the shit outta me.

It was an PO2 I knew on his Jap bike, one of the guys that shared an apartment up in Denbigh. This guy drove that bike balls-to-the-wall / no-holds-barred constantly.

A NN cop once told him that he wouldn't chase him if he caught him in the act, but a bike couldn't outrun a radio ... they would get him. I don't think they ever did.

He survived intact, only to re-enlist along with another PO2 after they had both been selected for first class, and shipped out together for duty in Italy, I believe.

It was a late night and i was on the night crew for G-1 flight deck shop. arounf 8pm we were getting some weps out to the squadron guys and of course nobody can see or listen to the rules about the farm and staying off the ordinance, well this one AA talks the talk as he leans on a topedo going on to the S-3 I said ok, this is it, , so I get the other buddy of mine and we set the fuse to safe and pull the pin so the vain spins and ticks...i tell the guy he armed the torpedo and that i have to get EOD and myself together to de-arm it, i tell him he has to hold the vain for now so it will not detonate, i said do not tell anyone or we will all be up the creek and to stay, I went to the shop and then down for dinner..had a little movie time and went back, said that EOD could not be found....let him hold it for another 30 minutes and then just put the pin in...there was never a chance of it arming but boy , he never came near the weps again.

Bisonhead, if he was one of my fellow A-div allstars he would of had a cigerette as well. In an illegal space I should add. I know of one MM2 that lived a stones throw from NNSB and would go home and sleep on his duty nights. Sure that does not sound too bad, however I should also tell you he was scene leader for the Inport Emergency Team. He slept in bed with his wife with his walkie-talkie (Hydra) turned all the way up.

at home in bed on duty

I did that too a few times while at NNSB on duty days. If I had pulled my watches for the day, I'd wait until about 7 or 8 p.m., then I left the ship and spent the night with the wife. A few beers and my own bed made for a more tolerable duty day ... Then I would just return an hour or so ahead of normal in the morning.

If I was assigned to the Inport Emergency Team for duty day, I took it seriously and spent the night on Ike (we weren't even allowed to enjoy the 'hospitality' of the Darby). And Ike had no heat at that point, and I believe only cold water.

But I noted with interest around this time that the Admiral's stateroom on the 03 level still contained his Queen sized bed. Alas, the next time a duty day on IET rolled around, I let myself into his stateroom, but the bed was gone. I then checked out the captain's quarters; no go there.

So I went over to a commander's stateroom, and bingo, there was a full or twin sized mattress in there.

G'nite.

Flooding on the 04 level??

Ron, speaking of Staterooms
On one duty day after most of the ship had gone home for the day, they called away flooding on the 04 level. Now those of us that qualified even basic DC know that you cannot have flooding on anything above the water line. However we get there and the XO and every other Kakhi was there running around in a panic. Turns out some airdale turned the water on in a deepsink in the head outside of flightdeck control and shut the deckdrains. This caused the water to rise until the water started to go down a cable way. This cable way lead straight down to the CO's stateroom. His nice comfy couch, big screen tv, and laxyboy type chairs were all soaking wet. The XO was damn near in tears. I think even the carpet had to be replaced. We opened the deck drains and let the water drain out. The XO made the airdales clean up the rest.
